Goals Reviewed and Renewed

Running:
For 2014 my running mileage goal was 500. I thought I’d be limping into December, barely making my miles and yet, I far exceeded my own expectations, with a jaw dropping 706 miles!! Over double my miles from last year. Whoa! Where to go from here? I’m looking to back away from big miles in 2015, focusing on speed and strength work instead.

2015 mileage

Good thing Stroller Warriors® likes old school paper trackers, since my Nike+ App has had a lot of issues lately. I do love it for the fun photos I can create, but I need to find something else for accuracy and reliability. Maybe a Fitbit??

My other running goal was to run the Honolulu Marathon. This never happened. Instead I traded my bib for the Xterra Half Trail (1:03, blue tank) run at Kualua Ranch. Seems like a strange trade after already completing two halves for the year, but when I weighed the possibilities: running in a massive marathon anywhere vs an exclusive trail half;  knowing we won’t be on island in the Fall next year, I had to take the half. It was the best decision I made all year. I wasn’t mentally ready to tackle a full yet anyhow.

half with a bomb

The Hibiscus Half (First of the Tropical Triple Crown – where is my fourth medal people??!!). The lady in the background accurately capturing the inner enthusiasm we all shared.

Looks like I’ll be saving my full Marathon for Redding 2016! I might even be able to talk hubby into running it with me (hint, hint), since we’ll have several babysitters on standby. The only downfall is that I’m not sure I’ll ever be this “trained up” again for long distance running, but alas, not even worth discussing since there still is no sign of the North Shore Marathon happening in 2015; my only other chance for a marathon on Oahu.

Hickam Half Photo

Post Hickam Half; the photo that made us famous. Well, at least in the magazine.

Professional:
I haven’t taken my architecture exam and have not received my California license. Boo hoo!! I’d like to say I’ve been too busy, but with the boys at school, that excuse isn’t going to hold. Something about the test. Flying across the ocean to take the three hour test. Studying for the test….I can really procrastinate. But here it is, I have to take that test. Otherwise I am even more unmarketable as an architect. As it is, I am very stale as my AZ client called it, and haven’t been in an office full time since 2005. This is going to be painful I have a feeling. I know, I need to schedule it already!

The Xterrra half. A great group of Mother Runners!!

Financial:
Big changes are afoot at Casa de McNulty. We’re prepping for a major life shift and finances are going to be a major player. I found it so compelling the day after Christmas when Kendra posted she and hubby were 100% debt free. I have heard of Dave Ramsey and actually had the opportunity to take the very Financial Peace University course they took in North Carolina, but I wasn’t ready. I just wasn’t. And thankfully I haven’t NEEDED to be, until now. Our paycheck is going to significantly, like 60%, decrease next year, so now is the time more than ever to get a jump start on financial freedom! If only the market were such that we could sell our NC house, instead of wondering if our renters were going to pay the rent at some point each month; our current renters oy vey!

Back to goals! I ordered the Financial Peace University online and we’re all set to start with the new year rolling in! That is when the disks arrive to the island.

pig moneyMy sister sent these piggy banks for the boys for Christmas. I’m unsure who’s happier: Brendon or myself. We talked about the different categories, what they meant and why we are putting money in the different slots. He found a quarter on the floor yesterday and told me he was going to put it in the slot for “gifts for needy children” (donate) because it would be the right thing to do. Gifts are his Love Language hands down. He has such a giving heart.

We’re all on board with the financial changes coming in 2015.

  1. Wow! 706 miles that is incredible Toni. What ever you set your mind to you accomplish. I am excited to see what’s ahead for you and Vance. God has made you for great things, I’m sure of it. 🙂

  2. I still can’t believe how many miles you logged! That’s insanely impressive!!! I love the photos. The one from the half marathon with the lady in the background- priceless. She makes the photo! I would never have noticed if you hadn’t pointed her out. And the photo that made Runner’s World is great. SO cool it made the magazine!!!!!!!! Last photo comment: you look great in those running pants!
I, too, have heard of Dave Ramsey, and I have a friend who practices the save, spend, donate with her kiddos. I have yet to look into it. Sounds like the perfect time for you guys to do the Financial Peace University. Super exciting!

    • I’m not sure on Financial Peace. It makes my stomach hurt reading the book, but I’ve only gotten through the first chapter. Ha! I agree, that lady in the back of the photo totally makes it. Thank you on the running pants. I’ll have to tell you, off line, why I went to wearing pants….
